We’re thrilled to announce that our Broad St Mall retail center in Reading has won a Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Award. Judges from several independent bodies recognized Broad St. Mall as leading the way in its sustainable practices

The Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organization and have become well established as one of the most popular environmental campaigns in the world. Their philosophy is to help others to help the environment.

The award recognizes that Broad St Mall is committed to continually improving its environmental performance and moving towards the best practices in corporate sustainability.

Broad St. Mall were committed to retaining their Zero Landfill policy which has been in place since 2019 and so has made significant investment into making sustainable improvements to their waste management systems including upgrading waste bins and the purchase of a state-of-the-art BioHiTech food waste digester located on site.

The Centre team are working to reduce Reading’s carbon emissions and so investment has also been made in improving recycling efficiencies. This has meant that the center is able to compact larger volume of cardboard and plastic waste which has resulted in a 50% reduction in collection visits. The Centre team ensure that waste is only collected by low emission vehicles.

All electricity supplies in Broad St. Mall are from 100% green renewable supplies and upgrades to the centers’ water systems have resulted in a 20% net reduction in water consumption.

Nicola Williamson, Centre Manager, Broad St. Mall says, “We are very grateful and proud to have won this award, but we are in no way standing still with this success: it has generated momentum in the team and our tenants to ensure we continue to operate in sustainable and efficient way. Further opportunities have been identified and training is underway to make more necessary changes. We want to inspire and support our tenants to think about how they use items and most importantly, how they dispose of them. Our continued shared vision is to invest in sustainable solutions, enabling us to deal with any future increases in waste production as the Centre’s retail, leisure and F&B offering continues to expand”.

At PM+U we are delighted that our team at Broad Street Mall have been recognized for their efforts.
